Description Of Classes

College Survival
Classes meet three times a week for 45 minutes. College Access Counselors at CUNY Prep will have approximately 15-20 students per College Survival section. The focus of these classes is to build students’ social and academic college readiness skills. Lessons and activities may include team building games and events, conflict-resolution training, discussion of current events, explorations of college opportunities, and college field trips.

Humanities
Combines three major academic disciplines: history, social studies, and language arts. Students work with primary and secondary sources to build their reading, interpretation and analysis skills. Among other activities, students read novels and poems, write journals and essays, and make oral presentations.

Mathematics
Includes instruction in pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry. Real-world applications and ties to everyday life. Problem-solving strategies are used, as students learn to apply mathematics.

Science
Courses cover Living Environment, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. Students understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories, which may include scientific inquiry, cell dynamics, the human body, ecology, and biology.

Literacy/Clubs
Classes focus on strengthening students’ reading and writing skills through engaging students in club activities like chess, photography, science labs, fashion design, and poetry.

Writing
Students take an elective class in writing that focuses on strengthening their essay and research paper writing skills for both the GED test and college readiness.
