CUNY Prep Week
Monday June 8th:
10AM
- Math at the Mall! The Mathematics Department heads up an exciting project that asks students to apply classroom learning to design a virtual mall. Students will design and administer community surveys to determine the types of stores, services, and other interesting attractions to include in their mall. In addition students will develop a finance plan, and marketing plan to include a radio and TV commercial to launch the opening of their mall.
1PM
- Cooking Chemistry Cook-Off! You be the judge as students demonstrate their knowledge of basic chemistry concepts while making their favorite dish. Students explore heat transfer methods, the chemistry of flavor and taste and the process of protein breakdown.
Tuesday June 9th:
10AM
- CSI CUNY Prep! The Science Department leads a whole-school activity in which our Principal is murdered! Students must gather data, think critically and logically about relationships between evidence and explanations, construct and analyze alternative explanations, and communicate scientific arguments.
1PM
- “Atomic Sundaes”! Students will illustrate principles of the chemical building blocks of matter using ice cream and assorted toppings.
Wednesday June 10th
10AM
- Bronx Heroes Exhibition! Students will honor several Bronx residents who have made significant contributions to residents of the Bronx. Students will describe their research, choices, and reasons why the honorees were selected. The honorees for this year are Ms. Majora Carter, Environmental Activist, Luis Ceneno, DJ and Author of”It's Just Begun", and Awilda Cordero, Founder of Emergency Rights.
1PM
- CUNY Prep has partnered with Mobile Cinema Park to demonstrate the power of 3D, multimedia, multi-sensory learning tools and its application and use in a variety of settings inside and outside of schools. We will be hosting three sessions at Hostos Community College (450 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10451, Rm C-391) in the afternoon beginning at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6 p.m. Representatives from this North Carolina based company will be here to present and answer any questions that you may have.
Thursday June 11th
- We’re taking it to the field! Today’s activity is a school-wide field day with games to foster team work and school culture. Our staff vs. students softball match is always a big hit!
Friday June 12th:
- Building “Blocks” through the Lenses: Using the lenses of the social science disciplines students will compete to create their ideal “block” in which they would want to live. Students will work collaboratively to decide the type of government, economy, cultural systems, geographic resources they will use to keep the block happy. The “blocks” will survive, thrive, or tank.
1-3 PM
- CUNY Prep Four Season Fashion Show: Students from the Fashion club will display and model their own handmade garments made during the cycle. Come out and see the next top model and designer live from CUNY Prep.
3-5 PM
- IT’S All ABOUT THE DATA! Join us as we release our 3rd Annual School Report that details our work during the 2008-2009 school year. We will discuss our student demographics, GED attainment, and college going and retention outcomes. This year we will feature both quantitative and qualitative findings that reflect our experiences working with out-of school youth. We will also view several video clips that document our work throughout the year. We invite practitioners, policy-makers, funders, and other interested professional to attend this event of dialogue, critique and analysis.
