Who would have thought that a holiday that is spent with family and close friends could be enjoyed so much by members of a school community? But that is exactly what happened at this year’s Thanksgiving celebration at CUNY Prep, as students and faculty shared not only a meal but also a talent show. Before the delicious dinner was served, students and faculty gathered in the cafeteria to enjoy a great show. Everyone was having a great time, especially when the fashion show started. Loud hip-hop music filled the room, as CUNY Prep models strutted down the runway wearing the clothes they and other students designed throughout the first cycle. CUNY Prep’s fashion designers were not the only people at the school who were showing off their talents on Wednesday, Nov. 23, the day of the school’s Thanksgiving celebration. Students, and even teachers, got their turns at the microphone. Two of the most moving performances came from Steven Rowe, who read a poem about relationships. And who can forget the musical performance of Mr. Jerome, one of CUNY Prep’s math teachers? His spiritual voice and songs captured everyone’s attention, and he received a huge ovation from both students and his fellow teachers. What would a Thanksgiving celebration be without a great meal? CUNY Prep’s administrators put out a huge feast for students and staff, including turkey, stuffing, vegetables, salads, and, of course, plenty of pie. CUNY Prep once again gave us a day to remember. The school staff created a place where not only do students come to be academically tutored but also a place where students can come to have fun and know that everyone is a part of one another. It’s hard to find another place like that these days. That is what makes CUNY Prep so different from every other school. For me, it was certainly a happy Thanksgiving.
